Volleyball Tips & Guides | VS Beach Vancouver

How to Get Better at Beach Volleyball Faster

1. Get Consistent Coaching The fastest way to improve is to have someone qualified watching you play and giving you real feedback. It's easy to develop bad habits on your own — and even easier to keep them without realizing it. At VS Beach our coaches have national team level experience and will spot things in your game you'd never notice yourself.

2. Drill, Don't Just Scrimmage Playing games is fun, but isolated drilling is where real improvement happens. Passing hundreds of balls, working on your serve repeatedly, or practicing your footwork in the sand will build muscle memory that shows up when the pressure is on in a real game.

3. Use Video Analysis Watching yourself play is one of the most eye-opening things you can do. At VS Beach we use in-practice video analysis to show you exactly what your technique looks like in real time. Seeing yourself serve or set on video is worth more than a dozen verbal corrections.

4. Work on Your Weaknesses, Not Your Strengths It's tempting to keep practicing what you're already good at. But in beach volleyball with only two players on your side, your weaknesses get exposed quickly. Identify the one or two parts of your game that are holding you back and dedicate focused time to improving them.

5. Play Consistently Throughout the Season Improvement compounds over time. One class every few weeks won't get you very far. Our 5 and 10 class punch passes and 8-week series are designed to keep you on the sand consistently so your skills build week over week.

Beach Volleyball vs Indoor Volleyball — What's the Difference?

If you've played indoor volleyball before, you might be wondering how different beach volleyball really is. The answer? More different than you'd expect — and most indoor players end up loving it. Here's a breakdown of the key differences.

The Court Indoor volleyball is played on a hard court with 6 players per side. Beach volleyball is played on sand with just 2 players per side. That smaller team size means you're covering a lot more ground and making a lot more decisions — every point, every rally, it's just you and your partner.

The Sand Sand changes everything. It slows you down, makes jumping harder, and requires a completely different movement style. The good news? It's also much easier on your joints than a hard court, and diving in sand is a lot more forgiving.

The Skills Many skills cross over — passing, setting, and serving are all fundamental in both versions. However, beach volleyball demands a much higher level of individual skill since there are only two of you. You can't rely on a libero to cover your passes or a setter to bail you out. Every player needs to be well-rounded.

The Strategy Beach volleyball is deeply strategic. Reading the wind, targeting your opponents' weaknesses, and communicating constantly with your partner are all critical. At VS Beach, our coaches — with national team level experience — teach you how to think the game at a high level, not just play it.

The Vibe Let's be honest — beach volleyball just feels different. Playing at Spanish Banks in Vancouver with the mountains in the background, sand between your toes, and sun overhead is a pretty hard experience to beat. It's competitive but social, and the community is incredibly welcoming.

The Ball Beach volleyballs are slightly larger and softer than indoor balls, and they're designed to handle wind and outdoor conditions. You'll notice the difference in how it floats and moves through the air, especially on a breezy day at Spanish Banks.

What to Wear and Bring

Vancouver weather can be unpredictable, so dress for the conditions:

  • Sunny day: Athletic wear or a bathing suit, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and lots of water

  • Cooler day: Long sleeve shirt, pants or compression tights

  • Always: Expect everything you wear to get sandy — that's part of the fun!

You don't need to bring any equipment. VS Beach provides all the Mikasa beach volleyballs and net systems so all you need to bring is yourself.

What the Session Looks Like

Classes run for 90 minutes and are structured to give you a mix of coaching, drills, and game play. Your coach will walk you through the fundamentals and make sure everyone is working at the right level. It's structured enough to actually improve your game but relaxed enough that you'll have a great time doing it.

For beginner classes expect to cover the basics — passing, setting, and serving — in a supportive and encouraging environment. Nobody is expected to be perfect on day one.

Who Else Will Be There

One of the best things about VS Beach is the community. Classes are grouped by skill level so you'll be playing with people at a similar stage as you. Most people show up solo the first time and leave having made new connections. It's one of the most social sports communities in Vancouver.

After Your First Class

You'll probably be a little tired, a lot sandy, and already thinking about when you can come back. Most first timers sign up for a punch pass after their first session so they can keep the momentum going. Our 5 and 10 class punch passes are the most popular option and give you the flexibility to book sessions throughout the summer at your own pace.
